Liberty Blog

Liberty_Blog was created to link Our Constitution to news articles and everyday events. The Constitution isn't just history; it is as meaningful today as it was in 1776. If our leaders don't follow its dictates, we are no longer a Democratic/Republic and no longer deserve to be set apart among the nations created by men. You'll get the Truth here, whether you are ready for it or not!

“NOTHING WILL HOLD US BACK...”

SEPTEMBER 3, 2004

“NOTHING WILL HOLD US BACK...”

And with that, George W. Bush declared war upon We, the People, Our Constitution, and the idea of a Government of the People, by the People, and FOR the people.

For four long years we have been trying to get this man to pay attention to We, his Employers, as he ruthlessly cast Our grievances aside to fulfill his own pursuits of war, poverty and fear.

WE, THE PEOPLE, REPUDIATED YOUR PHILOSOPHY THAT IS NEITHER COMPASSIONATE OR CONSERVATIVE!

Bush used his “acceptance” speech (as if there was the possibility of a choice!) to inform us that his “leave no child behind” program was making “sustained progress in reading and math.” What he did not mention was that schools have been forced to fire teachers, cut back classes and school hours, and dismiss schools early for the summer due to federal budget cuts in the public school program.

He did not tell you that his “leave no child behind” program also left children whose parents work without afterschool programs that provide an alternative to becoming “latch-key” kids. Nor did he explain why schools and programs like Second Harvest began a nationwide “backpack” program in April, 2004 to provide food to hungry children over the weekends and school holidays.

School personnel are aware that “progress in reading and math” depend on more than rhetoric. The backpack program was started because teachers and school nurses observed symptoms of hunger increasing during Bush’s four years. Tummy aches, dizziness, fatigue and an inability to concentrate were everyday complaints.

If Bush really wants to “leave no child behind” he might try to look into a more comprehensive program to feed the children whose parents are unemployed due to outsourcing, downsizing, and being “retrained” for jobs that aren’t there.
“America’s school are getting better, and nothing will hold us back”, he told us last night. Perhaps he should allow someone to read him the latest census data showing that poverty HAS RISEN EVERY YEAR HE HAS BEEN IN OFFICE. Just released figures show that 34.5 million people are living in poverty on an income of $18,400 or less! I don’t know which schools Bush is crowing about, but those figures speak of a decline, not “better”.

He moved on to let us know that he has taken care of the “elderly” by a medicare program that has already doubled in cost, without the “elderly” ever seeing the benefits. He bragged “soon every senior will be able to get prescription drug coverage, and nothing will hold us back”; except your plan to do away with social security by “privatizing” it -- or do you still plan to collect FICA taxes AFTER social security has been dismantled?

With our three trillion surplus, destined to repay the Social Security fund, squandered, the biggest deficit in history now standing at 521 billion as of February 2004, and the Times Square clock ticking off the cost of war in Iraq at $177,000,000 million per day and $122,820 per minute. (Remember, the poverty line income is now set at $18,400 for a family of four.); where is the money going to come from to REPAY THE FEDERAL INSURANCE CONTRIBUTION ACT (commonly called Social Security) PENSION FUND? I don’t think Bush, or the Republicans, have any plans to repay this fund. So there go the “social security” pensions and the medicare and that prescription drug benefit he is so proud of.

And naturally, for a man who portrays himself as a “war president”, a “commander-in-chief” of a civilian government run by We, the People, national security is uppermost on his mind. He tells us that, after the leisurely morning events of classroom sitting and photo ops while terrorists tore down our financial district and crippled our national defense headquarters that, “Since that day, I wake up every morning thinking about how to better protect our country. I will never relent in defending America -- whatever it takes”.

He must do most of his “thinking” while on vacation, since that is where he has spent most of his four years in office. And, his “relentless” defending of America took a backseat to getting his rich Saudi business partners out of the United States. In fact, more than a month after the attack, he was still “thinking” about how to best defend America when NATO bluntly stated, to paraphrase, that if he didn’t get his butt moving, they were going to go get bin Laden without him! Thereby instigating the timid forays into Afghanistan... but you can’t go after the oil fields of Iraq if you are busy hunting down terrorists who killed thousands of U. S. citizens, can you?

bin Laden forgotten, Bush concentrates on his “real” enemy lying between him and the Iraq oil fields, Saddam Hussein. “We are staying on the offensive -- striking terrorists abroad -- so we do not have to face them here at home.” Pray tell, “commander-in-chief, if you are “striking terrorists abroad” why are they slipping through your net to bomb Bali, Spain, Africa, the middle east with impunity?
If you are bringing peace to Iraq, why are almost one thousand of our soldiers dead after you declared the war over in May, 2003?

And, if “we do not face them here at home”, why are you continuing to restrict free travel, bringing on orange alerts, and guarding the Republican Convention more closely than Fort Knox?

To summarize, our agenda,

•to “fund early intervention programs to help students at risk” was already there, you gutted the program with your “entitlement” cuts and put those children at risk. You say you want

•to expand Pell grants for low and middle income families to “help more Americans start their career with a college program” but today’s college graduates are finding it difficult to find jobs and are ending up with the same type of job in the service industry that they had in high school and college. You want to

•provide low-income Americans with better access to health care, “In a new term, I will ensure [that] every poor county in America has a community or rural health center.” They had these, but you shut them down when you cut entitlements, commander-in-chief. And you want to

•continue” to appoint federal judges who know the difference between personal opinion and the strict interpretation of the law.” Yes, the judges who rule against women’s right to choose and the equal rights of all citizens - be it affirmative action or gay rights - do use personal opinion to try to change the concepts of Our constitution, but you have made no attempts to nominate impartial judges; those you nominate still espouse these abhorrent ideas.

And your final thoughts, “In the last four years, you and I have come to know each other. Even when we don’t agree, at least you know what I believe and where I stand.” YES WE DO. And that is why nothing that has gone on at the Republican convention has changed our minds. If you care to look, you can see how We, the People think and feel about four more years of your “leadership”. Around half a million people left their homes, their jobs, their schools to make their way to New York to bring you a message.

ANYONE BUT BUSH!!!

Now We go forward, to reclaim freedom lost, faithful to our desire for a new leader, hoping that our vote will be counted this time.

“Nothing will hold us back.”
George W. Bush, September 2, 2004
